The Orange and Cabonne districts provide a wonderful tourist destination and well established services and industries. Orange is a substantial and sophisticated rural centre which lies at the heart of some of New South Wales’ richest and most beautiful agricultural land.
The city of Orange has a population of approximately 40,000. It is located 261 km west of Sydney and 863 metres above sea level, a comfortable 3.5 hours drive from Sydney and 3 hours from Canberra. It is known as Australia’s Colour City with four distinct seasons, and at any time of year the Orange district and streets are alive with vibrant colours. The region is well serviced by the established cities of Orange and Blayney and the surrounding historic villages of Millthorpe, Carcoar, Molong, and Lucknow. These centres provide significant communities and wonderful village living as a lifestyle choice.
Overlooking the city of Orange is Mt Canobolas; an extinct volcano extending to 1,395m above sea level. At its base is Lake Canobolas and the surrounding countryside has the benefit of superb basalt soils. There are many walking and cycling tracks throughout this area, providing outdoor enthusiasts with hours of entertainment.
The origin of Orange is gold mining. The first paying gold in Australia was discovered at Ophir in 1851 just 18km northeast of Orange. This contributed to the development of many settlements and continues today with Newcrest Mining operations at Cadia Valley. The district produces fine quality produce celebrated at the Farmers’ Market each month, FOOD Week every April and Winefest in October each year. The agricultural production in the region stretches from vineyards, quality cattle and sheep, to gourmet venison, olive oil and a magnificent range of fruit, berries and vegetables.
Orange also has an active Conservatorium of Music, a City Theatre which hosts major touring performances and a Regional Art Gallery. There are three golf clubs, one of which is regarded as the best in country NSW and a wide range of specialty shops and services.
The district enjoys substantial health and medical services for regional NSW.
